WHAT IS BEING AN ADULT ANYWAY?

I just dug my car out of the snow. It took a good 30 minutes and shoveling about 12cm of fluffy white goodness off her and scraping her windows clear of ice so I could actually see the road.

I got a car!

My first ever car I brought with my very own money.

I feel like an adult (just a little?) but in the boot (trunk) of my car, there is a nice red sled.

I could have had blue, but red reminded me of Santa. Also, my mum always told me that red things go faster. Like red cars.

I wish my car was red because being white she sort of just disappears in the snow. In the morning I’m looking at a baby snow mountain rather than a vehicle.

But anyway -----------------------------------------------------------------

Does owning a car make you an adult?

What makes someone an adult anyway?

Is it when you move out of your family’s house? I didn’t do that until I was 20 and felt like a lost child when I was wandering around downtown Ikebukuro in Tokyo questioning why I never bothered to learn to read a map.

Is it life skills that make you an adult? Renting an apartment, paying bills…. Having a job to pay for these things.

When I was little I used to look to adults, expecting they had all the answers.

“What does this mean?”

“Why do people do bad things?”

“Why do people love each other and why do others not?”

“How should I live?”

Then you realise that adults really know nothing.

However, no one really knows what they are doing 100% of the time. It’s like we are all sort of running around trying to figure out our shit. Putting our own individual values to things in life. Knowledge is simply a perspective from experiences. Not a fact.

Just like there is no one and right way to live.

It's up to the individual.

Even if it's unconventional.

I don't think there is a wrong way to live if we feel fulfilled.

Maybe one day the time comes that we understand what we value most.

Then perhaps then all that running around makes a little more sense. It doesn’t seem so futile.

So, are you an adult when you understand what is important to you?

When you find your reason to continue running around and not feel it is meaningless?

---

Staring out my window watching the snowflakes drift in slow motion makes me pensive.

I should be editing my final graduation thesis draft.

Let’s do that.

.... after another cup of coffee.

My really super duper fast red sled!
